A Fierce Leader; From the Perspective of a Subordinate

Karen Delgado

How many of us can say we are part of a team with a leader that genuinely exudes the traits necessary to succeed? A leader that embraces integrity and humanity equally?

I often come across posts about leadership skills; what they are and what they are not. When I do, I am always tempted to tag my Director, as I can assure you, I am one of those lucky individuals to have a true leader.

Jarmani Dozier is the focus of this feature. He is the Site Director for the Rochester Center for Employment Opportunities. I have had many conversations with Jarmani on growth and leadership. I especially enjoy how the conversations are always so fruitful. We both learn through this type of engagement.

As ripped from the organization’s website,

“CEO exists to create greater opportunities for people who face multiple barriers to economic success. It works to reduce recidivism and increase employment.”

Mr. Dozier takes his role as Director personally, not just in social justice, but as a human and as the leader that he is.

Lao Tzu said it best. He said, “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say, we did it ourselves. “

Mr. Dozier is passionate about his work. He shows up and always aims to ensure that his team is stable. He focuses on the well-being of his staff, and this in my opinion, is evident through the sense of cohesion and unity in the office culture. He addresses the people (versus employees) that he works with, so that they, in turn, can feel supported and focus on their goals.

Mr. Dozier may be down to Earth, but don’t underestimate him! He is not only protective of his team, but also of the organization’s mission, along with the vulnerable population we have the privilege to serve. Jarmani is a problem-solver and executive decision-maker, always keeping the collective outcome in mind. He takes charge and delegates when necessary. He also encourages input and believes in transparency. His communicative nature produces an overall positive energy for all involved.

Mr. Dozier is self-aware and recognizes when he needs to step away and recharge. He is positively unapologetic and is not afraid to admit when he’s wrong. Mr. Dozier pushes for self-care and constantly reaches out to his team to ensure they are taking care of themselves. He offers just the right amount of vulnerability to be both understanding and empathetic. Throw in the mix, an air of confidence and humanity. He also offers himself in collaboration and integrates himself in such a way that he takes a back seat. He sets the stage for us to flourish and leaves room for error. If we make mistakes, we address them together. Mr. Dozier knows when to be present as the leader, as well as be humble and blend in; sharing in the accountability. This makes Jarmani personable, real, and most of all, genuine.

When it comes time to praising our efforts, Jarmani does it publicly, with a smile on his face. If the situation calls for reprimand, he does so privately. He takes the time to celebrate his team’s wins, whether personal or professional. This is very encouraging, in my opinion! He keeps us moving forward, focusing on the positives, and knowing we also face the negative as a team. Mr. Dozier understands that challenges are to be taken as learning opportunities and he reminds his team of this through his collaborative approach. He dishes out reassurance and positive reinforcement throughout the learning process, keeping his team engaged and motivated. His emotional intelligence is a definite plus as he applies it to his leadership, emphasizing his humanity.

He as leaders tend to be, is results-driven, but we as the team rarely feel the pressure. Mr. Dozier takes it upon himself to bear the brunt of the weight for his team, making for an extremely supportive work environment. The office culture remains upbeat, even through challenging times with Mr. Dozier’s person-centered approach. He rarely ever speaks without a smile and is great at actively listening to his team. He makes it a point to touch base with each of us daily and simply connect.

I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with such an individual; a leader that makes his team his priority. My wish is that everyone gets to experience such leadership in their careers; it makes a difference!

Thank you, Jarmani Dozier, for all that you do for your team! Your efforts are much appreciated!
