Feature Friday-She's Much Too Modest

Karen Delgado

She’s quiet; identifies as an introvert and has a heart of gold. It took me a while to get her to agree to let me write about her. She finally said yes, as long as I didn’t share her real name, and I didn’t share much.

Xio is a visionary; she has been for as long as I have known her. She is also especially fond of kids, in part due to her inability to have her own. She has never expressed bitterness over it. She accepted it with grace and gratitude. Yes, she grieved, but in her own way. She shared once, that she knew God had a grand purpose in His decision.

Since learning she would never be able to experience biological motherhood, Xio has put her efforts into helping underprivileged mothers back in her native home of Dominican Republic.

Every month, Xio sets aside a portion of her budget to cover the collection of baby items and sending them back home as part of care packages.

I asked her recently about how much she thought she had spent over the last several years on her good deed. Xio gave me a look of disbelief, as if to say, “I don’t know, but what does it matter?”

She described the happiness she experiences as she collects each of the items, as part of the thrill. The other part being, knowing she is helping others in need.

“If I can’t be a mother, at least I want to help one,” she said. “Besides” she added, “bringing a child into this world during these uncertain times may be very sad.”

“Look at these tiny shoes! How adorable is this sleeper? And look at these bling pacifiers! Have you ever seen such a thing?”

For a second, I think we both forgot these items would be additions to her next care packages as opposed to her own nursery. As sad as it is that Xio will never have children, the fact that she helps others is a beautiful way to channel her peaceful resignation of her deepest desire.

Xio, you are an amazing human being! You may not have received the little angel you always wanted, but nonetheless, you touch the lives of many little angels and their parents from miles and miles away.

With these short words, I am letting the world know just how special your heart of gold really is. You found a way to turn your pain into a personal mission that now enables her to reach many babies and their families.
