"...I have to carve my own way."

Karen Delgado

I sat there my first day at my new job several years back pondering how I had seemingly parked a million miles away. My car just sat down the street, but my spiked heels seemed to multiply the distance!

Latasha sat at the same table as I, taking in all the orientation details. Unbeknownst to me, she also pondered the same thoughts. When we realized we shared this dilemma, the conversation took off, and we have been friends ever since.

I would later have the honor to become Latasha’s life coach. She successfully completed my life and health coaching program. I could not have been prouder to see a client evolve. Latasha learned things about herself that catapulted her self-esteem.

Here are Latasha and I on a business trip to NYC, pre-COVID.

Latasha, known to some as Lexi, is a bubbly and ever-so charming individual. She is the sweetest gal; loving and whole-hearted. She is the type of person that will do what it takes for others to be okay. She holds friendships, and family bonds in the highest regard. She listens with her heart; you cannot get more genuine than that!

Latasha has the best sense of humor, and her laugh is infectious. You cannot leave a conversation with her without feeling energized! Although she struggled with the thought at first, Latasha loves being a fur mom to her dog, Mocha.

I look up to this lady because she has an adventurous soul. She is courageous, more than she realizes, and is not afraid to live and love. She enjoys traveling and experiencing, not just seeing the world. I remember she said to me once,

“I want to die with experiences, rather than things.”

Latasha spoke of the loss of those closest to her. It only reiterated how essential familial bonds are to her.

I asked Latasha which of the places she has visited was her favorite. She replied,

“Florence, Italy.” She told me her next destination is Quebec, Canada.

Latasha is currently a Financial Counselor in Rochester. She hopes to add Certified Financial Planner (CFP) to her resume. When I asked her to envision her future, Latasha stated the following.

“When I envision my future, I see me being my complete, and authentic self; freely and unapologetically; enjoying my life experiences. I envision freedom, and being healthy, preferably in a metropolitan city.”

I knew she would say that! I can see myself visiting her in some exotic city and having the time of our lives.

I went on to ask Latasha what she would want the world to know about her; how she would describe herself to a total stranger. Ironically, her response was simple. She said,

“I would want the world to know I love Jesus. I would want them to know that I am a simple person; I’m down to Earth. I am very loving and mean well, even though I am far from perfect.”

I admire Latasha’s strength and courage to look within herself when things don’t seem to be going well. As she explained,

“I ask myself, what have I done to contribute to the negativity I receive in any given situation? What exactly am I putting out in the world?”

If we all took this approach to problem-solving, the world would be a much happier place.

At the end of the conversation that led to this feature, Latasha came to her own realization.

She said,

“I don’t fit in. I have to carve my own way!”

As you realized the day you found your alter ego, Lexi, you are a warrior! Never forget that!

I love your new mantra!
